In August 1976 Winogrand taught a two-week workshop in a classroom above Nassau Street. For the first few days he barely spoke, getting by with one-word answers and crude jokes, and the students were about to ask for their money back. Then he said: all right, let's go shoot.
In his bag were two Leica M4s with 28 mm lenses and dozens of rolls of Tri-X, with yellow stickers on the lid where he noted the light. Once outside he said right away: good light, 1/250 at f/8. He shot standing in the middle of the crowd, smiling and nodding at passers-by. Asked whether he minded missing pictures while reloading, he answered that when he is reloading, there are no pictures.
