A Spanish painter who moved to Mexico, she painted with a fine brush, like medieval miniatures: ochre, Gothic towers, hooded figures. In her paintings an owl with elegant fingers sits at work, and beside it stands a machine on wheels whose hands are tentacle-like brushes.
Varo took alchemy seriously, and it shows in how her scenes are built: threads stretch out of windows, children fly a kite in a room with a starry sky behind the curtain. Louisiana Channel made a film about her in which three artists and two writers, among them Samanta Schweblin, talk about her influence.
