Designed by Pierre Chareau in collaboration with the Dutch architect Bernard Bijvoet, the Maison de Verre reimagined the modern home as a “machine for living in”. The client, Dr. Dalsace, sought to combine living space with a gynecological clinic. The glass-block facades diffused the light, creating the effect of a translucent curtain.
The interior contrasts with the refinement of the exterior: steel columns and slate slabs emphasize an industrial aesthetic. The house is full of engineering solutions — balustrades serve double functions, and the staircase recalls structures typical of shipbuilding. Chareau's approach lay not in a single style but in solving spatial and material problems with exceptional precision, which later inspired generations of architects.
