At the centre of the house Pierre Zoelly built for the sculptor Peter Hächler stands a concrete "tree". Its branches run out from the trunk, form the interior partitions and carry the outer enclosure. Zoelly himself admitted that the house was only fully worked out after this core had been built, and that the walls around it were there so people could actually live inside.
The sculptor's studio sits across a rock garden from the house. Zoelly liked a raw skeleton and found a finished box boring. In his words, he practised "the cult of ruin".
