The building follows the logic of Cidori, an old Japanese toy made of wooden sticks. Their joints are cut in a special shape, so the structure grows just by twisting the sticks together, with no nails or metal fittings. The toy is still made in Hida Takayama, a small mountain town with plenty of skilled woodworkers.
Here the same trick is used at medium scale: 6 by 6 cm members, no glue. The wooden grid carries the building and doubles as display space for the exhibits. The upper part juts out to keep rain off the wood, and the edges of the members are painted white for protection.
