Rupert Vandervell photographs London in black and white and waits a long time for each frame. The right mix of light and place lasts only a few seconds, and if he misses it, he has to come back another day. Most often there is a single figure in the shot, nearly swallowed by the size of the buildings.
Individual buildings interest him less. He says he finds beauty in the space around a subject rather than in the subject itself. Glass and steel throw light around, so the city looks different every day: deep dark shadows, sharp shafts of light, and an architectural detail showing up somewhere at the edge.
