Sibylle Bergemann (1941–2010) knew at fifteen that she wanted to be a photographer, but in 1958 she started training for a clerical job and went on to work as a secretary for various companies. She became a photographer anyway and shot out of Berlin for more than forty years: cities, women and dogs, over and over. She travelled to Dakar, Moscow, New York and Paris.
The show at the Berlinische Galerie is the first museum retrospective since her death. It has over 200 photographs, thirty of them never published before.
