Isolated Building Studies is a series about single houses left standing in cleared Chicago blocks. Some outlasted the housing crash, some held out during a land grab, some were just the last ones on an emptied street. Schalliol shoots each one head-on and dead center, so the buildings read like portraits, or like sentries on a vacant lot. The series includes Grand Boulevard and Washington Park, among other neighborhoods.
He works as a sociologist: Schalliol was a PhD student in sociology and urban communities at the University of Chicago. What interests him is less the fate of one house than the economic forces that leave such houses standing. The photographs were later collected in a book.
