The Rosmeulen chocolate factory in Nerem, near Tongeren, was founded in 1909 by Florent Rosmeulen. Belgian chocolate and gingerbread were made here, right next to the old railway between Tongeren and Liège. The 165-metre block was one of the first buildings in Belgium built in reinforced concrete, and above the main entrance it has a horseshoe-shaped Art Nouveau window.
Production stopped long ago. The building is listed and waiting to become housing. In the meantime A2O Architekten have turned it into a temporary pop-up bar, exhibition space and a place for children's workshops. Future owners of the lofts already take part in the design, both of their own flats and of the shared spaces.
