Katie Ladd photographed the San Cataldo Cemetery on black-and-white film, and little remains of the familiar image: the blue roofs and pink walls have turned the same gray. Most of the frame is taken up by a field. According to Rossi's design, towers and a final monument were to stand on it, but only part of the complex was built, and the site has become overgrown with grass.
The cube of the ossuary with its square windows stands without a roof. The architect Luis Callejas, who discussed these photographs, admits that he has never been there and does not want to go yet. He knows the cemetery from drawings and from Luigi Ghirri's photographs and is afraid of being disappointed.
