The museum stands in the northeast corner of Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province, on the site of Changjiang village. The village was razed in 2016, like many Chinese villages during the rush of urban development. The streets and houses where people had lived for decades went with it.
Beijing firm Vector Architects built a museum here for a large collection of contemporary art. Its facade is a single volume of pale brick. The client was the developer Shanxi Qiandu Real Estate Development.
