Charles Rennie Mackintosh built the Hill House in 1902 for the publisher Walter Blackie and his family. It stands in Helensburgh, 30 km west of Glasgow, looking south over the Clyde estuary. The house needs restoration that could take up to 15 years, so Carmody Groarke wrapped it in a huge temporary box. Inside, the house is treated as an artefact.
The house stays open to visitors. An elevated walkway loops around the building and rises over it, so people can watch the conservation work from above. The visitor facilities sit in a separate timber building under the same enclosure.
