The hotel sits where the desert meets the sea. On his first visit, Miguel Ángel Aragonés saw the purest, most minimalist landscape a horizon could have drawn. The preliminary project dates from January 2012, the hotel opened in December 2015, and the Mar Abierto spa was finished two months after that. The studio did the construction and the lighting itself, as it usually does.
White rectangular volumes are tied together by shallow pools. The one exception is the oval restaurant that seems to float in its water basin, woven from bent steel rods and local mangrove branches. Aragonés wanted something round and soft to set against the rigid concrete, and thought of a cocoon. In Spanish, mar adentro means "the sea inside."
