The chapel sits on a mountain ridge near the small town of Krumbach. It replaces a Lourdes chapel of wood and stone, almost 200 years old, that had fallen into ruin. Bernardo Bader Architekten rebuilt it on the same footprint: a single nave and an apse.
Where a spire would normally be, there is now a steep A-frame rising from a faceted wooden volume. The form was worked out together with the people of Krumbach and local craftsmen. Inside, the vertical grain of the boards stretches the perspective, and light comes from the front. A statue saved from the old chapel stands to one side, and the eye passes it on the way to the white apse and the meadows beyond.
