A wayside chapel for cyclists, set where the forest meets open ground. The Siegfried and Elfriede Denzel Foundation commissioned seven of them, the Sieben Kapellen project, and gave every architect the same brief: timber construction, a cross nearby, somewhere to sit.
On his first visit Pawson decided the chapel should be found like an object left on the site. From some angles it reads as a pile of logs stacked up to dry, from others as a sculpture on a concrete plinth. The wood is barely touched. Inside it is dark, lit only by narrow clerestories high along both walls.
